In and around Heathrow

London Heathrow Airport is situated within the borough of Hillingdon to the south-west of the city. It also borders the borough of Hounslow. There are a number of attractions in the area, including green spaces, boutique shops and historic sites.

National Trust properties in the area include Osterley House and Park, in Isleworth, and Ham House and Garden, in Richmond. Osterley House is a magnificent neo-classical mansion, dating from 1576, with beautiful landscaped grounds. On show at Ham House is an amazing furniture and textiles collection. The formal 17th century gardens are undergoing restoration and visitors can explore various walking trails in the area.

Richmond itself is an attractive historic town, with many fashion boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Located on the Thames, the town and surrounding area has a number of green spaces. The river has an attractive frontage where visitors can sit to watch boats and people pass and there are walkways along the water in both directions.

Nearby, the Royal Botanic Garden Kew is an incredible landscaped area with many gardens and glasshouses. The National Nature Reserve of Richmond Park is over 2000 acres of woodland and heathland, perfect for cycling or exploring on foot. Richmond Park was developed by Charles I in the 17th century as a deer park and is still home to hundreds of red and fallow deer.

The area surrounding Heathrow encompasses a number of diverse and multi-cultural neighbourhoods. Hundreds of years ago this area was mostly farmland and the suburbs which have now been enveloped by London were originally small villages. Many held regular markets for traders travelling between London and the rest of the country. Wealthy estates were part and parcel of the landscape, with landowners including those of Osterley House, Ham House and several more. Some properties have now passed to the National Trust or English Heritage, while others remain in private ownership.

The Great West Road, opened in 1925, paved the way for several factories to set up in the area, such as Currys, Smith’s Potato Crisps and Gillette. Like London Heathrow Airport itself, the factories brought with them many opportunities for employment, and this stretch of road became known as the Golden Mile. Due to its proximity with London Heathrow Airport, from about the 1960s the area became popular with immigrants from south Asia.

Famous people associated with the local areas of Hounslow and Hillingdon include actors Andy Serkis, Jane Seymour and Hugh Grant, presenter Fearne Cotton, comedian Jimmy Carr, and singers Phil Collins, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Freddie Mercury.
